I took an accidental nap tonight. I was on the couch reading. I was between dinner courses. And by that I mean I got home from work, was ever so slightly hungry so I grabbed a couple hard-boiled eggs and turned them into deviled eggs, sat on the couch and started reading my book while snacking on deviled eggs.
And then somehow I was laying down with a blanket on me, book on my chin, and an empty egg-plate on the TV-tray. And it was 8:30pm. How was it more than 2 hours later?! And I was a little hungry. So I made popcorn. I think popcorn for dinner is a delightful thing. And yet, I'm hungry again. Sigh.
I have a fear that I'll be awake until 3am pacing around like a hungry ghost trying to find the next perfect snackeroo to put in my mouth. Ha Loo? Snackaroo? Too bad there isn't a tub of ginger icecream in my freezer...now that would be the next perfect thing. I think I need to make pudding now. But not the pudding that the Food Whore found in the grocery.
And tomorrow is going to be a long day that will include an hour in the office, a trip to the Longmont house, a few hours back in the office doing madcrazy prep for the Saturday work meeting, another trip to the Longmont house, a quick bite to eat while on the road between the Longmont house and her massage appointment in Erie, and hopefully not falling asleep on the massage table.
Well, perhaps starting pudding after 10pm is a silly endeavor. It certainly won't be chilled and yummy until the morning. Hm...breakfast pudding...Snackaroo? Ha Loo?

Grump grump grump.
Seriously, at 8am it was -11 degrees Fahrenheit outside. MINUS ELEVEN. With the snow and ice and slow-moving traffic, It took me 45 minutes to drive to work, when it usually takes me 10. And was school closed? Oh, no it was not. I stomped into my office suite this morning and announced "I can't believe it isn't a snow day!" and then remembered to say "good morning" and "hello" to the two people there.
I have been a big ol' grump the last few days. Grump. Grr. Arrgh. Grump. Maybe it was being home alone on Saturday night when I knew a bunch of my friends were gathering together and I couldn't go because of a conflict of interest situation. Maybe it was because the days keep on getting darker and darker and I'm really not starting to believe that we'll start getting more sunlight ever again. Maybe it was because I was missing my sister since I had been really looking forward to her visit this weekend that got cancelled. Maybe I'm just grumpy.
On the one hand, I'm really looking forward to some time off. On the other hand, my job is so much less satisfying during Winter and Summer breaks. Sure, I got a bunch of stuff done today that I needed to do. Sure I did have a little bit of contact with a few people. But really, being at work when the students and faculty are gone is really pretty depressing for me. See....grumpy!
Maybe I need some chocolate. Maybe I need some coffee. Maybe I need a nap. Or sunshine. Maybe I just need to remember what it is that I'm grateful for...and there's a lot! Ok. Grateful not grumpy. I'm putting that on my little whiteboard next to my desk tomorrow at work. Grateful not grumpy. I'll let you know how that goes.

lizard spock
oh my goodness. I'm hooked. I am. I'm hooked on a silly TV show about a bunch of science geek friends. And the show today opened with a scene in which they were fighting over watching ST:DS9 or Saturn3 and they played a modified rock/paper/scissors: rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock. Seriously seriously I was on the floor with tears in my eyes from laughing so hard.
has the clip.
this has a nice chart for those who can't follow the clip.
I miss my uber nerd friends.
Last week I said a temporary goodbye to my friend D who lives in Texas and I don't see often, but is now starting Officer Candidate School in the army and may not have as much contact as I have had (which, granted, isn't a ton). And during our conversation, he was telling me about a TV show he likes and equated it a mix of two scifi geek shows. My response, immediately, was "I love you!" because, really, so few people in my life can relate to me on that level, and I adore my geek friends. Last week I also got to hang with a friend and we talked and talked and talked and then watched an episode of Buffy. We were both bummed that we didn't have time for more than one episode since it was a weeknight and we spent so much (good) time talking and catching up....so much geekdom, so little time.

indulge
So one of the perks of being single and living alone is having a day like I did yesterday. I slept in until 8:30, I flipped the cheese that was pressing on the cheese press, I ate breakfast while watching (crappy) saturday morning cartoons, I took a detox bath while drinking tea, I did some picking up around the house, I knit, did some more cheese stuff, I drove out to Miss J's house to pick up her kitties, I ate, I snuggled with kitties, I started watching a bollywood movie and fell asleep on the couch before it ended and picked myself up and went to bed with more kitty snuggling.
Not a bad Saturday, really.
Today I woke up early with one kitty tapdancing on my head at 6:30 and the other tapdancing on my nightstand kicking off all the loose objects to get my attention at they thudded to the floor (my glasses, my cell phone, my watch). Ok, ok, I'm AWAKE! You kitties aren't starving...I know yesterday you broke into the food and had a little party before I caught you and I still fed you the regular amount just in case. Seriously.
I'm having a kitty sleepover because Miss J was at a wedding yesterday evening...I'm curious to hear how it went. After a very inward day yesterday, I'm really excited about doing stuff today, being active, maybe going on a hike if it warms up.
I am very excited because I'm in the midst of a cheddar experiment. Cheddar started on Friday night, continued yesterday, and will likely continue for a few more days. At this point my cheddars are air drying on a wooden board in The Room No Kitty Shall Enter. There are two cheddars because this recipe made WAY more cheese than can fit in my press. I tried really hard to shove it all in and eventually gave up. Big Cheddar is the batch that got pressed with as much curd as I could reasonably fit in the press. Little Cheddar got pressed in a colander under a gallon jug of water while Big was pressing. They have to dry 2-4 days until the surface is dry and a nice rind has developed. Then they'll get coated in cheese wax and set in the fridge to age until Thanksgiving when the make the trip to St. Louis with me. This cheddar is exciting, but I have to wait for SO LONG! I may have to make some other cheese today that I can eat now.
Well, it is 7:30, so time to eat breakfast!

a whole day off
Today, Sunday, September 14 is my first whole day off since....er...I actually had to go look at a calendar to get the answer...September 1. Yes, I haven't had a whole day off in 2 weeks. No WONDER I'm feeling all kablooey.
Last weekend M was in town and we worked all weekend at the house. The house that should have been sold this week. And wasn't. There were lots of projects that got accomplished in the last week including moving my washer & dryer to my apartment! YAY! Cleaning the house in preparation for whatever is next. Having the furnace "cleaned and serviced". Talking to lots of prospective tenants. Finding new tenants. Hacking at 4-6 foot tall weeds (somewhat satisfying, but not yet complete). And moving more stuff to my place. Sigh. There are still lots of things that need to be put away.
My apartment is discombobulated. There are boxes to be sorted through, there are things to put away, there are things to be thrown out...things and things and things. And today I finally got to put away some of the things. The big'n'tall filing cabinet that moved temporarily into my bedroom and out of the space for the washer and dryer is now in my spare room. Stuff that was piled in the spare room is back in order again. There are still boxes of stuff in my bedroom...so many boxes.
And in the middle of all this material STUFF in my life, I've had two weeks of emotional STUFF, too. Having M back in town for several days and spending time with him was really sweet. I know why we were together for 10 years. I know why I married him. I know I still have my stuff to figure out, and that is why I'm not in a relationship right now. One of the days he was here, we went to the ranch that has most of our herd and I got to see my kids (ok, my alpacas). And Angel had a new baby and she remembered me...I think. And I cried and cried seeing my babies. And I went to a memorial service for a friend's mother. And the ex-boyfriend and I are trying to be friends. And work has been mostly back-to-back 10 minute meetings with students in which I've laughed and been serious and cried and tried to be present with each person and what they've brought to the meetings.
And there's been interesting intellectual stuff in my life the last two weeks. I'm teaching myself Hindi and being very dedicated about spending time every day on this. I'm excited to have a new project, excited by how fast I seem to be picking up the written language (I can read a lot of words even if I don't understand the meaning yet). And och, I forget how learning something new also means getting tired and hungry...my brain is WORKING. And I've been offered a really interesting project at work...the President requested me for this. Me? Me! Wow...hard to say no. Still working out the details to see if it is even possible...will give more detail if this actually happens. And I'm taking on a new leadership role at my volunteer site (I'm on the Board of Directors for a local independent high school) where I am now (starting last week) the Chair of the Event Planning Committee. And yesterday at our all-day Board Retreat I volunteered to oversee the (re-)Accreditation process that is happening this year at the school.
In order to take on new stuff, there is stuff I have to let go. And I have to recharge. I have to have down-time to take care of me. So today is a whole day off. Wheee!

furry black hole of no escape
For the past week I've had house guests of the furry smooshyface variety. My friend the faboo Miss J is out of town and her supercutie and quite talented kitties have come to Camp Jennie.
I thought you might enjoy some of the photos I've taken. Jane and Bu and I have been doing so many things:
made fancy dinners
power napped
laundry
belly wars
refined on our interior decorating skills
practiced using The Force
played hide 'n seek
worked on our narcolepsy
made cheese!
snuggled
It was so fun to have them here, and the last few days since they've gone home, I've really missed them.

narc
narcolepsy: a condition characterized by frequent and uncontrollable periods of deep sleep.
I think I've been having narcoleptic episodes lately. Maybe I'm just not getting enough sleep. Tuesday I came home, made dinner, ate dinner, and then popped in a video at 7pm with a plan to knit for 30 min and then call my friend back and then maybe do some household chores. I woke up after midnight, knitting all askew, video long over wondering what happened to my evening. This isn't the first time. I've been meaning to blog about all sorts of things, but I've been so, so busy in the last week! Yay for my full social life and many splendiferous activities, but boo for the not getting my blog on.
I'm trying to think about what exciting adventures I have had in the last week...the highlight was clearly Saturday night. The Pre-Birthday SuperFantastico Friend Night Out Night. We saw Hell Boy II, we dined on super yummy sushi, and had lots of fun and lots of laughing. There was an attempt to go to a party afterwards, but things didn't pan out for me there. I was the ride for one friend and took him home between sushi and party and when I arrived at the approximate party location and I was waiting for further directions I realized that I was feeling full--not full of food, but life-full, happy, satisfied, content. I didn't need more. And so I chose to go home, snuggle up in my bed and go to sleep before 12:30.
I spent Sunday in home-retreat mode...I didn't change out of my PoohBear nightgown all day, I didn't leave the house all day. I read the paper, I drank coffee, I watched a Bollywood movie (Munna Bhai MBBS), I took a nap, I meditated, I knit and knit and knit, I washed dishes, I cooked, I cleaned out some weird old stuff from the fridge, I watched The Princess Bride, I ate, I cleaned, and I went to bed at 10. Perhaps not exciting, but so luxurious to have a me-day.

drama drama drama
So as some of you have picked up on, I was dating someone, and now that dating is over. sigh. It was fun and beautiful and lovely, and now it is over. Did I start dating too soon after my marriage ended? probably. Did I get advice from lots of people not to? you bet. And did I listen to my head or my heart? yeah, hearts do a great job of shutting up heads sometimes.
So the last few days while I've been wallowing in sadness and self-pity and loneliness, I've gone back to an old habit, TV. Specifically, I've been watching episodes of Grey's Anatomy online. Watching a bunch of ridiculously attractive people having crazier drama than me...not a terrible way to numb out.
And, of course, while watching my brain candy, there were things that spoke to me, and I had to write them down. I seriously have little scraps of paper in my bedroom with quote scrawl. am I hopeless? probably.
The quotes:
"Is it better to be alone and feel like a success, or be in a relationship and feel like a failure?"
"Do you know how to walk away? Do you know when not to take less than you deserve?"
"The thing about addiction is, it never ends well. Because eventually, whatever it is that was getting us high, stops feeling good, and starts to hurt. Still, they say you don’t kick the bad habit till you hit rock bottom. But how do you know when you’re there? Because no matter how badly a thing is hurting us, sometimes, letting it go hurts more."
"The truth is painful. Deep down, nobody wants to hear it, especially when it hits close to home. Sometimes we tell the truth because the truth is all we have to give. Sometimes we tell the truth because we need to say it out loud to hear it for ourselves. And sometimes we tell the truth because we just can't help ourselves. Sometimes, we tell them because we owe them at least that much."
"No matter how hard we try, No matter how good our intentions, We are going to make mistakes. We are going to hurt people. We are going to get hurt."
"In some ways we grow up; we have families… we get married, divorced… but for the most part we still have the same problems that we did when we were fifteen. No matter how much we grow taller, grow older, we are still forever stumbling… forever wondering, forever… young."
I'm out of brain candy now. Lucky for me, I've got a jam-packed day of back-to-back meetings from 9am-6:30pm tomorrow. whee! :) That's one way to keep the brain occupied. And now that I'm back from retreat, I'll get to go back to one of my little selfish jennie habits, my solo friday nights. Friday nights are for bollywood movies and samosas and spicy pickle and lots of other delightful treats. Yay for Fridays...almost there.

first new blog
My life is, once again, in a groundless state. I'm listening to Anais Mitchell and drinking a lot of tea.
Your Fonder Heart (Anais Mitchell)
come out, come on, come outside
don’t you hide your handsome face from me
I want to see you half-lit in the half-light
laughing with the whites of your dark eyes
shining
darkly
way over yonder I’m waiting and wondering
wither your fonder heart lies
come out, the streets are breathing
heaving green to red to green
come with your nicotine and wine
tambourine keeping time
come and find me in the evening
way over yonder I’m waiting and wondering
wither your fonder heart lies
way over yonder I’m waiting and wondering
whether your fonder heart lies
come out, come inspired
you will not come to harm
if I cannot take you for a liar or a lover
I’ll take you for my brother in arms
way over yonder I’m waiting and wondering
wither you fonder heart lies
way over yonder I’m waiting and wondering
whether your fonder heart lies
